How CCTV Surveys Find Root Intrusion Quickly

Tree roots are among the most common causes of underground drain problems around Chester, especially in areas like Hoole, Upton, Tarvin and Christleton, where older clay pipe systems are still prevalent.

The tricky part is that root intrusion usually starts quietly. You might notice the sink draining a bit slower, the toilet occasionally gurgling, or an outside drain smelling worse after rain. At first, it doesn’t seem serious.

Then one day, the drain blocks completely.

I was recently at a property in Mickle Trafford where the homeowner had been clearing the same blockage every few months with drain cleaner from the DIY shop. It would improve for a week or two, then the problem would come back again.

Once we carried out a CCTV Drain Survey in Chester, the cause became obvious straight away. A mass of tree roots had pushed through an old pipe joint and was catching paper, grease and debris inside the line.

Without the camera inspection, you’d never have known from above ground.

Roots naturally grow towards moisture. Even a tiny crack or loose joint in a drain pipe releases enough moisture to attract them.

Once inside the pipe, they continue to expand and form a net-like blockage that traps debris.

Common warning signs include:

β€’ Repeated Blocked Drains Chester
β€’ Slow-draining sinks or toilets
β€’ Gurgling noises in pipework
β€’ Smells from outdoor drains
β€’ Water backing up during heavy rain

The longer it’s left, the worse the restriction usually becomes.

A CCTV drain survey allows us to inspect the inside of the pipe in real time without digging anything up.

The camera quickly shows:

  • Exactly where the roots have entered
  • How severe the intrusion is
  • Whether the pipe has cracked or shifted
  • If the damage can be repaired without excavation

In many cases, root intrusion can be cleared mechanically and repaired using localised Drain Repairs Chester, such as patch lining.

That’s much cheaper and less disruptive than waiting for a full collapse.

Once the roots are identified, we normally:

  1. Remove the roots using specialist cutting equipment
  2. Re-inspect the pipe with CCTV
  3. Repair the damaged section if needed
  4. Restore proper flow through the drain

We often combine this with preventative work to improve wider Drainage in Chester around the property.

Luke’s Advice

If a drain keeps blocking in the same place over and over again, there’s usually a reason. Tree roots are one of the biggest causes we find in older Chester drainage systems, and a CCTV survey spots them far quicker than guessing from the surface.
